THE POWER OF VIDEO EDITOR-CLIENT COMMUNICATION IN VIDEO EDITING
PART 1
Miscommunication
Lost in Confusion
When Visions Collide
Effective communication isn’t just important – it’s the ‘lifeblood’ of successful relationships, both personal and professional. It creates clarity, prevents misunderstandings, and drives collaboration by allowing everyone to express ideas and expectations clearly.
As my Dutch advertising mentor Mart Agterberg used to say with conviction:
“Effective communication is the most difficult thing there is.”
Coming from an accomplished copywriter for radio and television commercials, a talented musician, and a virtuoso guitarist who passed in 2021, these words carry particular weight.
The Foundation of Client Success
Whether you’re a seasoned professional, or just starting your journey as a video editor, building strong relationships with clients is absolutely crucial to your project success and business growth. Efficient communication isn’t just a nice-to-have – it’s the tool that helps you understand your clients’ deepest needs and goals, enabling you to deliver work that not just meets but exceeds their wildest expectations.
When Communication Fails: A Story from the Editing Bay
Let me share a tale from my early career. I once worked with a client who was bursting with enthusiasm about creating a promotional video for his business. He had a vivid vision, complete with specific pacing, color schemes, and an overall mood that he could see clearly in his mind’s eye.
The challenge? Translating that mental masterpiece into words.
During our editing sessions, his descriptions often wandered into contradiction territory:
“I want it to feel modern, but also classic”, or “Make it fast-paced, but not too fast”.
These vague directives left a galaxy of room for interpretation. After several rounds of confusion, we changed our approach. Instead of relying solely on words, we engaged in more visual discussions:
- Exchanging mood boards
- Sharing sample clips
- Reviewing rough drafts
Refining concepts with each interaction. Yes, this collaborative process took longer than expected. But it strengthened my understanding of what the client truly needed and ultimately delivered a final video that matched his vision – resulting in one happy client! 😁
Lessons from the Editing Room
This experience reinforced three crucial elements in client communication:
- Patience – Sometimes understanding takes time
- Clear communication – Finding the right language and tools to express ideas
- Visual references – When words fail, examples speak volumes
How We’ve Improved the Process
At Cut It Short, we’ve transformed these lessons into action by prioritising clear briefs from the very beginning of each project. Our clients access a Dedicated Client Portal where, upon requesting a new video using a structured form, they can:
- Describe their video vision in detail
- Specify their style preferences
- Share examples, links and references
- Or choose to delegate all creative decisions to our team
This system gives us a crystal-clear understanding of client goals before editing begins. Clients can further refine their video by submitting Revision Requests with detailed improvement points through chat messages with the editor.
Alternatively, they can use our Video Proofing Tool, which enhances collaboration by allowing stakeholders to work together in real-time from any internet-enabled device, enabling precise feedback through timestamped comments, and visual annotations directly on video frames.
This combination of features ensures clear communication and effective refinement of video content.
The Universal Power of Communication
Each project comes with its unique set of challenges. By understanding these obstacles and addressing them through careful planning, clear communication, and proactive problem-solving, video editors can focus on what they do best: creating quality content that delights clients and ensures project success.
In any workplace, clear communication enhances teamwork, boosts productivity, and efficiently resolves conflicts. Whether verbal, written, or nonverbal, strong communication is the key to problem-solving, decision-making, and achieving shared goals. Without it, even the most brilliant ideas risk getting lost in the static.
What’s Coming Next
Stay tuned for Part 2 of our series, where we’ll tackle the notorious challenge of “Scope Creep” – that gradual expansion of project objectives, deliverables, or requirements beyond the initial plan.
We’ll explore how it happens, why it’s problematic, and most importantly, how to prevent it from derailing your projects and relationships.
Don’t touch that remote! More coming soon!
