Madonna recently out-nominated Taylor Swift, Ariana Grande and Sabrina Carpenter at the 2026 VMAs. Four of the biggest names in music, all fighting for Artist Of The Year alongside Bruno Mars and Morgan Wallen. Not a nominee list, but a highlight reel waiting to happen.
Every one of these artists built their year on visuals as much as vocals. A pop career today lives or dies in the first three seconds of a video, not the third verse of a song. Madonna’s leading the nominations was no accident, because four decades in, she still understands that the image sells the song before the song sells itself.
Brands watching this race should take the same lesson into their next brief. Nobody wins Artist Of The Year with raw footage sitting untouched on a hard drive. Someone sat in an edit bay and decided which frame hooks, which cut lands, which three seconds stop the scroll.
The nominations get the headlines. The edit gets the award. 🎬
