There is a particular discipline in committing to near-total monochrome. Most directors reach for colour to signal mood, but when you strip that option away, every other decision – composition, contrast, symmetry – has to carry double the weight. This video by Actress and Overchord, directed around Anna van der Velde, commits fully and earns it.
The cubist framing is doing serious structural work. These are compositions that read as considered architecture, where the geometry of the set and the geometry of the edit feel like the same decision. High contrast is often used as a shortcut to atmosphere. Here it feels like the only logical consequence of the visual logic already established.
What makes this land as mood rather than exercise is the science-fiction undertone running through the clean, spherical shots. Symmetrical sets could easily read as cold or clinical. Instead, they read as inhabited, like a science-fiction world with its own internal rules. That shift from aesthetic choice to world-building, is the difference between a beautiful video and a memorable one. Well done. 🤩
The palette is minimal. The craft is anything but.
