ARBORATOR – MORNING RITUAL
Security Cams, Jump-Cuts & The Blues: Building the Arborator Experience
Creating the 30-second video titled ‘Arborator – Morning Ritual’ presented us with distinct challenges due to the uneven quality of the raw footage. Filmed by amateurs on mobile phones, the material varied significantly—some shots were steady, thanks to tripod usage, while others were handheld, and required extensive stabilisation in post-production.
To cut it short, our first priority was to ensure consistency across all footage, creating a seamless foundation for the final edit.
After stabilising, straightening, and aligning the footage, we sought to elevate the visual appeal by introducing dynamic elements. Fast-paced simulated camera movements, combined with jump-cuts, and coupled with energetic wipes and fades, were applied to complement the piercing blues guitar music we selected for this video.
These creative choices not only enhanced the pacing, but also crafted a more engaging and rhythmically cohesive visual experience, synchronised to the music.
Untamed Aesthetics, Unscripted Style
Crafted especially for social media, it was crucial to establish an unmistakable atmosphere right from the opening scene. We deliberately started the video with stark, grainy footage styled after security camera surveillance, injecting a raw, unpolished authenticity that stands in deliberate contrast to typical polished fashion marketing.
This intentional choice was made to evoke a sense of secrecy and mystery, instantly drawing viewers into a world of secretive urban vigilance. The voyeuristic tension it creates commands attention, signaling that they are witnessing something genuine and unscripted.
This powerful visual hook didn’t stand alone. We fortified our unconventional narrative by strategically splicing in footage of wild animals that echoed Arborator’s distinctive store aesthetics—a visual metaphor for the brand’s untamed energy and rebellious spirit.
Story Enhancing through Sound Design
Each audio layer was meticulously crafted to amplify the visual tension we created. Distorted background noises, library sync sounds, sound effects, and even foley, created an immersive sonic landscape that, once mixed, heightens the sensory experience.
To further enhance the dynamics of the soundtrack, our editing team introduced a strategic, abrupt pause in the predominant blues soundtrack when the main character enters the backroom. This momentary disruption of the auditory flow heightens the emotional tension, creating a stark silence that commands the viewer’s attention.
The abrupt pause, paired with the male character’s humming to smooth old jazz music, and loud coffee machine noises, all create a serene coffeehouse ambiance in the backroom of the Arborator store.
The sudden quiet makes the reintroduction of the blues music later on feel more profound, ensuring it leaves a lasting imprint and resonates more deeply, ultimately creating a memorable impression that lingers.
The playful integration of all sound elements intensify the viewer’s emotional impact, which further drives home the shop’s idiosyncratic character.
That’s a Wrap
Despite the initial limitations of the raw footage, we successfully crafted a compelling short video. Our sound design played a crucial role by syncing the audio to the rhythm of the visuals. By enhancing the atmosphere with the right sound effects, we elevated the mood and brought depth to the footage.
The end result transcends typical fashion marketing, and became a rhythmically captivating video that effectively conveyed the desired shop atmosphere and its ethos through every frame and sound.
